FAQ
Part 1 - Medical Series Questions
1. What is personal protective equipment?
Personal protective equipment, commonly referred to as "PPE", is equipment worn to minimize exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace injuries and illnesses. These injuries and illnesses may result from contact with chemical, radiological, physical, electrical, mechanical, or other workplace hazards. Personal protective equipment may include items such as gloves, safety glasses and shoes, earplugs or muffs, hard hats, respirators, or coveralls, vests and full body suits.
Examples: For some Lab employees, “Standard PPE” is lab coats, closed toe shoes, and safety glasses. For some Facility employees, “Standard PPE” is long pants, safety shoes, safety glasses, and gloves.
2. What can be done to ensure proper use of personal protective equipment?
All personal protective equipment (PPE) should be safely designed, well-maintained, and comfortable to encourage use. Proper fit is crucial for safety. When engineering, work practice, and administrative controls fall short, employers must provide PPE and ensure its correct use. They must also train workers on:
- When PPE is necessary
- The type of PPE needed
- Proper use, adjustment, and removal
- PPE limitations
- Care, maintenance, lifespan, and disposal
A PPE program should be implemented, addressing hazards, PPE selection, maintenance, employee training, and ongoing effectiveness monitoring.
3. What are the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) requirements for PPE?
All PPE clothing and equipment must be of safe design and construction, and be maintained in a clean and reliable fashion. Employers shall take the fit and comfort of PPE into consideration when selecting appropriate items for their workplace. PPE that fits well and is comfortable to wear will encourage employee use.
Part 2 - Safety Series Questions
4. Do You Offer ANSI(American National Standards Institute) Class 2 Clothing and ANSI Class 3 Clothing?
Yes, we offer different ANSI classifications, including ANSI class 3 clothing, ANSI class 2 clothing, ANSI class 2 safety vests, ANSI Class 3 safety vests etc.
5. Who Decides What ANSI Class I Need To Buy?
Recommendations surrounding the speed of traffic, the complexity of the work environments, and the worker’s ability to focus should all be considered. Each company must have a “competent person” (often the Safety Director or Manager) make this determination. A risk assessment should be performed to answer this question, or the company may select to default to Class III for all of their high visibility needs as a precaution.
6. What is ANSI Z87.1 Safety Glasses
ANSI Z87.1 sets forth criteria related to the general requirements, testing, permanent marking, selection, care, and use of protectors to minimize the occurrence and severity or prevention of injuries from such hazards as impact, non-ionizing radiation and liquid splash exposures in occupational and educational environments including, but not limited to, machinery operations, material welding and cutting, chemical handling, and assembly operations. New content has been added to address anti-fog lens assessments, relaxed optics requirements and the standard has been updated to provide additional clarity to testing execution.
7. How to choose the right safety glasses?
Class 1
ANSI Class 1 glasses are for environments with lower visibility needs, where traffic speeds are under 25 mph, and workers are at a safe distance. These garments have minimal reflective material, making them suitable for roles like warehouse or parking service workers.
Class 2
ANSI Class 2 glasses is designed for higher traffic speeds or complex backgrounds. It features more reflective material and is ideal for school crossing guards, airport ground staffs, and parking or toll booth operators.
Class 3
ANSI Class 3 glasses offers the highest visibility with extensive reflective stripes and background material, crucial for high-risk environments with traffic over 50 mph. It is suited for road construction crews, emergency responders, and utility workers.
8. How can I tell if the frame and lenses qualify for Z87.1 standards?
Zenni Z87.1 Safety Glasses are marked with “Z87-2+” or “Z87+” on the frame and “Zenni+” etched in the lenses, indicating compliance with ANSI Z87.1 high impact and industrial safety standards for eye protection.
